“Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski (1849-1915) – the chief representative of the Polish artists associated with Munich. The world he presented was full of realistic, but also idyllic scenes of country life and culture – not its labour, but its leisure: open carriages full of jovial peasants dashing over sandy roads, or sleighs pulled by several horses scudding through the snow. (-) No one was as good at expressing the suspense of the battle between man and beast, the dread in the horses under attack, and the horror in the people.”
